PS3 Grand Theft Auto IV Multiplayer solution

Posted by

Lots of people (especially on the PS3) have been suffering with getting a connection to the Grand Theft Auto IV Multiplayer option. I managed to work out a solution to the problem and hope this will help people in the same boat as I was.

It seems the problem is NAT type. We need to get NAT type 1. I was using 2 (as others have suggested but to no avail). Follow the 12 steps below to get NAT type 1. It’s quite straight forward. The only tricky part is you need to know your PPPoe user name and password. Google your ISP together with the phrase “PPPoE” and you should be able to find it. The default (in Britain at least) is ‘broadband1′ as the username and ‘password’ as the password (both without the quote marks).

  1. On the PS3 menu, go to “Settings” > “Network Settings” > Check your “Settings and Connection Status List” You’ll probably have NAT Type 2 or 3.
  2. Go back and go to “Internet Connection Settings” > Say “Yes” (It will sign you out)
  3. Select “Custom”
  4. Select your connection method (wired connection or wireless)
  5. Select “Manual Settings”
  6. Select the default options (it differs between wired connections and wireless) until you get to “IP Address Setting” > Select PPPoE (I don’t know what it is either)
  7. Here you need to enter your PPPoE user name and password. As I said above, the default is Username : broadband1 Password: password (If this doesn’t work, Google the name of your ISP together with the phrase “PPPoe” or call your ISP).
  8. Select “Automatic” for DNS Setting
  9. Select “Manual” for MTU (IMPORTANT) Enter 1500 as the number here.
  10. Proxy Server “Do not Use”
  11. UPnP “Enable”
  12. You’re done!

Press the circle button to test your connection. Everything should work fine. If not, you’ve probably made a mistake wit the PPPoE username and password. Don’t worry that it might say that the UPnP is unavailable. It doesn’t seem to matter.

You should have NAT Type 1! Hurraaah!

Now try Mulitplayer and I’ll wager you’re able to connect every time.

If it works (or doesn’t, let me know by leaving me a comment below).

Hope this helps.

I did everything as you said, and it cannot find my IP address. So i went back to normal, and UPnP is not available and NAT is Type 3. I also port forward the router so I am able to play MP GTA.

      Hi Euro852.

Your message was a little unclear – do you mean you can now play the Multiplayer game? If so, I’m glad you’re online.

      Cheers.

    Hi lukAS and erhan,

I’m sorry but I’m not really in a position to help. I’m no expert on this – I just know it works for me and lots of others. Maybe you could get in touch with your ISP and see if they can help.

    Good luck!

as many before me, i have also followed your instructions to the letter, i then attempted to test the connection, it did not successfully test the connection, i did notice that there was a change in the NAT TYPE but it did not state NAT TYPE – 1, IT STATED NAT TYPE -
i then thought the NAT type was disabled, i then attempted to connect to multiplayer i keep getting the message ” a connection to the network could not be established, go to settings>network settings> and check your settings (80130182) i have checked and double checked my username and password
i have called my isp (telstra australia) they were not much help at all they simply stated that they no longer use PPPoE but only use PPPoA and the only username and passwords that are relevant are those provided to me initially to setup my internet connection.
at the end of the day this did not work for me , thanx for trying though.

      Hi Martin,

Thanks for your comment. I’m guessing that it’s something to do with your ISP not using PPPoE. Let us know how you get on.
